This fictional scene was painted for the Watkins Glen Bentley Reunion. Archie Smith’s corner, on the unpaved section of the original 6.6 mile Watkins Glen track, was unpaved as was the following straight section. It was heavily salted to keep the dust to a minimum. This was an important aspect because it contained the fastest part of the circuit. I have attempted to capture the excitement of the early days of road racing when riding mechanics risked their lives for the sport of it. A Bentley 3-liter such as the one shown won the 1921 Tourist Trophy. It is followed by a 1929 “Blower”.
